Spirit of One Tree Hill
Auckland's One Tree Hill has been a significant landmark for over a hundred years and also a target of Maori protesters. In 1994 the tree was damaged but survived. I believe the supporting harness and ropes in my picture date from that attack. I chose a panoramic format to include the monument, tree and associated ropes and waited until the clouds were pleasing. Fast forward a few years to 1999, when another attack on the tree meant its end had come. I got out my negative for this picture, and had a think how I could turn it into a surrealist representation of when the tree was in place. This is a very different fine art photograph from my usual. Here the goal was not to produce a realistic looking photograph but rather a ghost of what had been there before.
