Holidaying in Indonesia, I came across this cane chair and balcony. I found them fascinating, but rather a challenge to photograph. The sunlight was harsh, and the bamboo floor was a similar tone to the chair itself. I really wanted the floor to be darker. The idea came to slosh water all over the floor to darken it. However it dried very quickly, and my wife Julie and I would have to work quickly. We sloshed cups of water rapidly over the entire floor and when we’d achieved the effect I was after, I took the photo. The finished photograph captures the details and textures, in a very bright setting but not overwhelmed by the light.
